Authentic Classic Margarita with Fresh Lime

This definitive classic margarita celebrates the vibrant, clean flavors of high-quality spirits and sun-ripened citrus. By using 100% agave tequila and hand-squeezed lime juice, you achieve a sophisticated balance of tartness and earthiness that bottled mixes simply cannot replicate.

Method

  1. Prepare your glassware: Place the sea salt on a small flat plate. Run a lime wedge around the outer rim of four rocks glasses and dip the edges into the salt to coat. Fill the prepared glasses with fresh ice.

  2. Mix the base: In a large cocktail shaker, combine the tequila blanco, Cointreau, fresh lime juice, and agave nectar. If you prefer a dryer drink, you can reduce the agave to 1 teaspoon.

  3. Chill: Fill the shaker halfway with a generous amount of ice. Secure the lid tightly and shake vigorously for at least 15 to 20 seconds. The outside of the shaker should feel very cold and appear frosted.

  4. Serve: Strain the mixture evenly into the four salt-rimmed glasses.

  5. Garnish: Float a fresh lime wheel on top of each drink or perch a wedge on the rim. Serve immediately while ice-cold.

Notes

Use 100% de Agave tequila to ensure the recipe remains grain-free and avoids refined sugar additives found in 'mixto' brands.

For a seasonal twist, swap half the lime juice for blood orange juice in the winter or muddled berries in the summer.

Always use fresh-squeezed lime juice; the bottled variety contains preservatives that alter the bright, essential oils of the citrus.

Chill your glasses in the freezer for 10 minutes before rimming to keep the cocktail cold without excessive dilution.

Questions

Can I use Mezcal instead of Tequila?
Absolutely. Substituting Mezcal adds a wonderful earthy smokiness to the drink. You can also do a 50/50 split of Tequila and Mezcal for a more balanced profile.
How do I make this a 'skinny' margarita?
This recipe is already a whole-food version. To reduce the sugar further, simply omit the agave nectar entirely or use a splash of sparkling water to lengthen the drink.
What is the best salt for the rim?
A coarse, flaky sea salt or a specialized Maldon salt works best. Avoid fine table salt, as it is too salty and lacks the pleasant crunch.
Can I make a large batch for a party?
Yes. Mix the tequila, liqueur, lime juice, and agave in a pitcher. Do not add ice until you are ready to shake and serve to prevent the flavors from becoming watered down.
